From the super heavy and loud to the stretched-out mind-melting weeeard: yep, that’s psychedelic Michigan.  Most of the stuff from the early days is coming out of Detroit, but a lot of the new stuff is from Ann Arbor.  Then there’s the Bad Indians from Ypsilanti.

Like the music itself, I’m playing fast and loose on what is and is not psychedelia here. I mean, can you blame me for wanting to play the Stooges and MC5?  So much of what’s been called “proto-punk” seems to bend rock to its outer limits–not in a Destroy All Monsters kind of way, but more like, whoa, my ears are bleeding (which is kind of like synesthesia right?)

And a band that isn’t on the playlist because they’re, well, just too PUNK: Death. For All the World to See. Listen to them. They’ll blow your mind.  Favorite track: Politicians in My Eyes
